Jaguars being sold

Some years ago Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver told me he'd never sell the team. He meant it at the time but he grew older and his debt grew as well leading to the inevitable news: Weaver is selling the team, I've confirmed with multiple league sources.

The team has been sold to Shahid Khan, who was in play to buy St. Louis Rams.

A person close to Weaver said Weaver received written guarantees Khan would keep the team in Jacksonville.

Jack Del Rio fired

Jack Del Rio is the first coaching casualty of the season, I've confirmed.

This is not a stunning development. The only thing mildly surprising is the timing. There was a belief he would last the season.

Assistant Mel Tucker takes over in the interim.

Del Rio is still owed $5 million. Incredible. So he won't be applying for unemployment insurance anytime soon.

The Daily Shoutout: Jaguars Time?

OPENING HIT: If Peyton Manning does miss time -- and that's still a big if but looking likely -- who in the division become the favorites? To most, it's Houston. But I have a different possible Manning-less AFC South favorite: Jacksonville.

I know, I know--you're laughing. Go ahead, mock me. You won't be alone. If Manning misses a game or two, or even more (assuming Manning isn't sandbagging us all), the division might be up for grabs.

The prevailing theory even before the Manning speculation was that a young Houston team was ready to steal the division from Manning.

But I've never been convinced of the Texans. Something about them has always been concerning to me. They've yet to show the mental toughness of a winner. That may change this year but I won't believe it until I see it.

Now, this is the part where all of you and Pete Prisco chuckle. I like the Jaguars' coaching staff. Unlike many people, I think quarterback David Garrard is solid. Maurice Jones-Drew is terrific. Tight end Marcedes Lewis is good and I admit that defense isn't great but it's good enough in a weak division. I like them. I like them better than the Texans.

Yes, I'm crazy. But why not the Jaguars? What have the Texans proved over the past few years?

I've written the Colts can win with Kerry Collins and they can but the Jaguars can also easily sneak in there. Unless I'm totally crazy which is possible.
