The Daily Shoutout: Jason Taylor Hall of Famer?

OPENING HIT: This week will likely be Jason Taylor's last game. The Miami Herald reported he will be retiring after a 15-year career. Is he a Hall of Famer?

This is what I do know. Taylor had the kind of career every player dreams to have. He played 15 seasons, a remarkable stint for a defensive lineman. He had a major impact on the sport as a top pass rusher. He had 139 1/2 career sacks. That is a staggering amount and he will finish his career trailing, as the Herald reported, only Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Kevin Greene, Chris Doleman and Michael Strahan. White might be the best defensive lineman of all time, Smith is probably top five, and Strahan deserves to be in the Hall. Again, Taylor is in good company.

Taylor was also a great representative of the sport. Now, that doesn't matter for the Hall of Fame. Lawrence Taylor is in the Hall of Fame and he was, ahem, not exactly a good dude. The Hall is all about numbers and impact but the fact Taylor wasn't snorting coke between snaps will help.

Back to the original question. Is Taylor a Hall of Famer? I'd probably vote for him. Longevity means a great deal to me and what Taylor did, play at a high level for a long time, means even more.

"I guess we don't need to mention that Taylor has more forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, interceptions, and touchdowns then both Bruce Smith and Reggie White."

Actually, no, we don't need to mention your comparison of an OLB to two DE's, but you already did. While we're at it, let's compare the rushing stats of Walter Payton vs Steve Largent. Now let's compare the passing stats of Joe Montana vs Bruce Matthews. These stat comparisons are no more or no less as asinine and insignificant as your Taylor-touting blabbering.

He was a specialist like a reliever in baseball.

He was good at his craft; but teams could run at him and negate him as threat.

I would not elect him to the Hall of Fame though I like and respect him.

But considering who has been elected to the Hall of Fame, I wouldn't be surprised to see him gain a place.

Curious, is this article quid pro quo for source material in the past?

I agree with GoRomoGo- he won't be a first time pick but he will have a bust in Canton before long.  Congrats to Jason Taylor on a fine career!

He is a hall of famer, but when does Joe Klecko who had a bigger impact on the game albeit for a shorter time get in?

I'd bet on him getting in.  He IS in good company.....and bad company. LT should give up his spot for this Taylor.  Jason was "a great representive of the sport"...that fact seems does seem to be a negative rather than a positive for induction.  Writers and TV pundits need extole the virtues of the Jason Taylors out there WHILE they are playing not as they retire.  An HOF induction in today's world of sports is a leap of faith. OJ and LT have seen to that.  Good luck Jason.
