Gruden returning to coaching?

Posted on: December 26, 2011 11:50 pm
Jon Gruden is leaning towards returning to coaching, two sources close to the situation confirmed to me.

The San Diego Union-Tribune first reported that Gruden had decided to return to coaching next season.

However, two sources said late Monday night that while Gruden is indeed leaning towards returning, it's not certain. But some of this might be semantics. I'm told Gruden wants to see what positions he could possibly get before making a 100 percent final decision and that he hasn't officially made one yet because of the uncertainty.

(I was also told Gruden didn't expect this news to get out so soon.)

But again, semantics. He wants to come back. That's the important part of this story. And while I fully expect Gruden to issue a statement with some sort of non-denial/denial saying he's happy at ESPN, he's eyeing a return.

Gruden wants to coach again as soon as possible. That part is fact.

"He's ready to leave television," said one source, "but only if the right job is out there."

And that job, as the Union-Tribune reported, could be the St. Louis Rams.

Gruden returning to coaching?

I am in agreement with whitecat31 here.  Not a coincidence that this news comes out of San Diego.  Truth be told, the Chargers would do better with a Gruden type coach.  Question is would we miss him in the booth on Monday Night Football?  No go ahead and go back to coaching...

Gruden returning to coaching?

I'd rather have Gruden, who has won in this league with two teams and has a ring, than one of these unproven offensive or defensive coordinators who have never been a head coach before.  Often, these coaches are better coordinators and fail as head coaches.  But I cannot stand how these ex-coaches go into the booth and talk like they know everything.  It would be MNF's gain by having him leave, just like when Kornheiser left the booth.  MNF has stunk on ESPN, just like every other sport they broadcast, because Tirico is awful too. They need to put an analyst in there that does not talk like a wise guy.

JHawker, your Vikings comments don't all make sense.  You said the following: "Plus they will have a Top 5 pick to use also, could possibly go after RG3 despite already having Harvin".  What does Harvin and RG3 have to do with one another?  They play different positions.  This team has far bigger needs than QB.  Give Ponder a chance to develop.  And weren't you guys all calling for Childress' head last year saying how bad a coach he was?  What good base to they have?  AP will never be the same back again (RB's don't ever get 100% from an ACL tear), Harvin is constantly hurt and on the weekly injury report, and they play in the same division as Green Bay (which will be good for years with Rodgers), the Lions (who are on the rise), and the Bears (who when healthy are a better team).

Gruden returning to coaching?

I knew they would pay for thaT dumb move!!!!!!I'd ask why the Offensive Genius couldn't develope a great Qb???I wouldn't take him. Like Cohwer, I think they get soft from sitting and telling what they think instead of the stress of getting fired for making the wrong draft picks or personal moves!!!!!Ifd I were them, I wouldn't leave either!!!

Gruden returning to coaching?

The best coach is the one soon to be hired.  Once they have the job reality hits and their performance is scrutinized.  Gruden did not do a great job at player relationships in Tampa and played mind games with his players like Mike Shannahan.  See how that's working for Shannanan in Washington.  You want stability in your quarterback positions but Gruden treats them as changable parts.  Teams that win on a consistant basis have stable quarterback situations.

Gruden returning to coaching?

can he go back to the Buccaneers? he would probably get a good welcome back from the fans despite the fact he was accused of using Dungee's tea to win the Super Bowl.

Gruden returning to coaching?

The Chucky dolls are flying off the shelves once again, who would be left to blow all of the college QB's entering the draft in his absence?

Gruden returning to coaching?

Many teams can dream about getting Gruden, but there is a reason why it is the San Diego Union Tribune that is reporting this news.  Gruden is letting it be leaked because he wants the Chargers job.
