Jaguars being sold

Posted on: November 29, 2011 11:06 am
Some years ago Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver told me he'd never sell the team. He meant it at the time but he grew older and his debt grew as well leading to the inevitable news: Weaver is selling the team, I've confirmed with multiple league sources.

The team has been sold to Shahid Khan, who was in play to buy St. Louis Rams.

A person close to Weaver said Weaver received written guarantees Khan would keep the team in Jacksonville.

More on this story later.

Jaguars being sold

Holy Crap!  The stupid bus is loading up on this blog!

Two things:

1.) Most of you that talk about the Jacksonville organization, their horrible fan base, the lack of history/winning, blackouts, etc. are simply either confused, receiving (and spreading) inaccurate information or just plain ignorant.  Over the past 5, 10 and 15 (and 16) years the Jags have the best record of any NFL team located in Florida.  As for the fan base and game attendance, outside of 2009 it has the highest of all the Florida NFL franchises (on average) and is always at the top of that list for stadium capacity (see link below).  On a tangent note, the franchise hasn't had a blackout since 2009 while 22 of the other 31 NFL teams only wish they could say the same not to mention Tampa hasn't televised but a few home games over the past few years.  AND they've done all of this with only a 16 year existence versus that of Tampa (35 years) and Miami (45 years).

Now I know we don't like to talk about stats, facts, etc on this site (unless we can skew them) but that's all I have for this topic. That being said, and I'm not saying it would be impossible for the Jags to move, but the candidates more likely would be the Vikings, Chargers, Raiders, Buccaneers or Rams. All/Most have losing records as of recent and/or poor attendance and/or unpalatable relationships with their marketplaces.

2.) For some of you ignorant enough to judge a person based strictly on his country of origin - a country he left before puberty and that you have somehow broad-stroked even though it contains more than 175 million people - well, you're a moron. Hopefully other people don't use idiots like you to judge all Americans. Seriously, how dumb can you be?  That sort of Limbaugh, Palin, Beck and Bachman rhetoric is so old (and stupid).  The Tea Party - Where Politics Meets NASCAR.

Freeman, FLorio and other pundits like them are all idiots. It's been well know for several years that Weaver would eventually sell the team. His kids had no interest in running the franchise. He openly talked about an exit strategy.

Second, most NFL fans outside Jax don't know Jack about Jax (pun intended) and sheepishly regurgiatate what they read or hear and have no clue if it's accurate or correct. The NFL would be short sighted to move a team in a growing sun belt city while there are northern & midwestern cities with NFL teams that have shrinking populations. And LA has proven 3 times they can't support a team.

The Jags stadium was built to hold a capacity crowd of over 85k for the annual UGA/UF game. It was a pre-requisite to keep the 90 year traditional game in Jax. Otherwise the stadium would have been built to hold around 65k like Chicago, Indy, and other NFL cities. Right now Jax averages over 62K in attendance and 92% capacity. Both are around 20th in the league. Check attendance and you will find teams like Cincy, Buffalo, Tampa, Miami, and several other cities with far less average attendance and capacity as low as 75%.

Finally, the Jags are a young franchise. Kids born the first season are now 17-18 years old. These kids are growing up Jag fans. Give them a few more years to get jobs and money in their pocket and attendance will explode.

Umm... Jacksonville is not the smallest NFL market. Buffalo and Green Bay are both smaller.

Heard on Garrard on the radio yesterday.  He would not say one negative word about the Jaguars organization or Del Rio.  He talked about having to turn down jobs as late as last week.  Garrard would have needed to sit out the season.  It makes good football sense to let a quarterback who uses legs go, when he is suffering from a major back issue.

as a jaguars fan I just hope this means someone else does the drafting. It seems like every year I watch the draft and I'm like hey theirs still some really good talent on the board. The jaguars draft cecil shorts from who gives a crap university. WHAT. Or the year the jaguars drafted 3 dt's in the same draft when receiver was terrible. This year they need to be thinking one thing only blackmon and instead they'll draft ikad shulu from pakistan. Wonder Why?

Doesnt the patriot act forbid anyone named Shahid Khan, from owning an NFL franchise?
