Jack Del Rio fired

Jack Del Rio is the first coaching casualty of the season, I've confirmed.

This is not a stunning development. The only thing mildly surprising is the timing. There was a belief he would last the season.

Assistant Mel Tucker takes over in the interim.

Del Rio is still owed $5 million. Incredible. So he won't be applying for unemployment insurance anytime soon.

More on this story later.

Jack Del Rio fired

Del Rio had exactly two good seasons with Jacksonville, but let's not act like he was the problem here. JVille hasn't had a good team in years. In fact, when the Jags did win, Del Rio was the biggest reason why. His teams have been quarterbacked between Leftwich and Garrard, and most of his defenses have been unspectacular. MJD has basically been the only good player that Del Rio was given. Besides Josh Scobee, but he's a kicker of course. Del Rio was not the issue, and deserved a much better hand than he was dealt over the years, but I can't disagree with this decision. A fresh face at the helm couldn't hurt, and I wouldn't put up with that kind of apathy and detachment if I were Weaver

Nice Guy - fixed his SPA when he coached here in Baltimore and we got tickets to a game as an added bonus.

But it ends there. I was surprized to see him get a head coaching job when he really wasn't that effective of a LB'ers coach here.

Small market team that really has no chance to compete with the present ownership, so a new coach won't change anything.

Jack Del Rio fired

This is a move that is long overdue.  The Jaguars have been underperformers under Del Rio for years.  On defense, the team is actually pretty decent.  They took 4 games to gel, but they are at least keeping the Jags in games.   The offense has been atrocious.  The cut of Garrard (and I know he was injured) was ridiculous.  This is the second time they have jettisoned their starter with less than a week to the regular season.

If all of the pudits are correct, this was Del Rio's call, and it was a bad one.

The only guy who plays consistently hard is MJD.  Everyone else on the team has periods of "non-caring."  Their offense has always been "bland" at best and predictable at worst.  Scobee may be the MVP of this team.

Del Rio lost this team two years ago, and he should have been gone last year, when they had the chance to knock out the Colts and came up limp.  That collapse last year should have been the death knell.

Thanks for your time.

Jack is a good coach, just not a great coach. They told him playoffs or bust and then had him cut his starting qb, which really wasn't fair. They even had him go on tv and say it wasn't about the money, which I think he did as a favor to the owner but was far from genuine. Garrard could have helped the rookie but I understand 8 million is a lot for a mentor. Jack was a lame duck coach this year and really showed a lot of class throughout a virtually impossibe situation. To be fair to him, the last two gm's have made horrific picks and I expect the Gene Smith will be out the door soon. If they would have had faith in the home town boy (Tebow) they would have the stadium full and we wouldn't have to hear the L.A. Talk. Other than Maurice Jones Drew, i'd scrap the whole offense as even Mercedes Lewis has gotten fat and dropped off. Good Luck Mr. Del Rio, your character held up during a rough circumstance which says a lot about you and finally thank you for all of your effort for our grand city!

Garrard is rehabbing a bad back, which is why he hasn't been signed. Apparently he's been hurt for a while.

Del Rio was the HC, not the GM.  I am not a huge fan of Del Rio's, but he was not the problem here.  The ownership is cheap and the GM is the guy that drafted these players/reaches that are not producing.  Jack will land on his feel.  I am not sure about the franchise.

Garrard had a herniated disk in his back that required surgery.

Garrard is injured which is why sports analysts aren't even bringing him up as an option.
