The Daily Shoutout: LeBron James and the NFL

OPENING HIT: Now, part of what LeBron James did in inquiring about the deadline for a free agent to sign was James being James: an attention w----. That's what he does. James framed the question to make people think he was interested in playing in the NFL. He never will. It will never happen. James was a very good player in high school but he would never risk his trillions of dollars from the NBA for a real job. So, there's that.

Still, I wanted to explore just how good James would be in football. I've written elsewhere there are some personnel men who believe James would be a Pro Bowler at tight end in two to three years a fact I find extremely difficult to believe. But there are league people drooling over the idea of James playing football.

It would be a disaster because of the contact. It's been a while since James was hit and the last time that happened was in high school for him. And don't give me the NBA is physical. The only thing that rivals the NFL in terms of physicality are the fighting sports.

There's also the problem of blocking. If James played tight end he'd have to do the dirty work of trying to knock guys into the dirt. I don't see James possessing the grit to do that.

The biggest reason proponents say it could work is because of his athleticism. Can't argue with that. James would instantly be one of the top five athletes in the NFL. He's quick, strong and agile. He's a better athlete than Gates or Gonzalez--the latter is a definite Hall of Famer the former a close call.

Then again, this is all speculative, because James doesn't possess the guts to really try such a thing, despite his teasing tweet.

LeBroom wouldnt have refs bailing him out....Plus, tanking the 4th quarter is only for Browns and luckeyes. I dont see this akron choke artist doing anything but running his mouth on twitter, short paying with weak tips on meals, and blaming others....Go away, your no Jordan.

Is ESPN going to host an hour or two hour long special where he announces which NFL team he is going to service....I mean lend his services to. Will this guy ever just shut up and win a championship so he can ride off into his own version of the sunset.

Who wil they get to host the special.....Juim Nance, Phil Simms, Al Michaels,.....Buggs Bunny?

Teams are drooling over the thought of knocking this idiots head off. To even say that is an insult to these guys and football, there is no way he could withstand the physical beating of a practice let alone a game.. Then we would have to watch him whine to the officials for a flag just like he does on the court. I would love to see him get cleaned going over the middle though and believe most of this country would too. Put him Wad and Bosh on the Dolphins and they would prob win 1,2,3,4,5,6...super bowls!!! HA

If you think James is gutless and could never play in the NFL (which you are correct about) and he is an attention wh--- then why are you giving him the extra attention by writing an article about it.  By the way in this arean of political correctness and refraining from making offensive comments how is it that CBS condones one of its writers using the abbreviation w---- and not get in trouble or better yet fired.  Do you honestly think the audience is dumb enough not to know that w---- means whore, and don't give me this your mind makes what it wants to out of abbreviation as thats another insult to my intellegence.  Why does Mike Freeman not get fired for using the word whore in his column?

James might be quick, but he is not fast. He does not have the explosiveness required of players who play tight end.
this is a joke right? for someone who sounds awfully confident in their analysis of lebron james, you're actually pretty wrong. to say that lebron doesn't have explosiveness to play in the nfl is foolish, because if you actually watch him play, you can truly gauge how explosive the man actually is. kids these days...
