Adrian Peterson's guaranteed cash

There was a time when teams were frightened to hand over large amounts of guaranteed money to running backs. Even great ones. There were exceptions, of course, but in general the rule was that runners were too easily injured, too fragile, too replaceable.

Frank Gore recently signed a three-year extension with $13 million guaranteed. That's the kind of moderate guaranteed money most runners get. Nothing crazy. Nothing obscene. Particularly ones with injury histories like Gore.

Adrian Peterson signed a new seven-year deal and while I could not confirm the exact numbers reported by the website Profootballtalk.com -- $100 million total, $36 million guaranteed -- it is clear Peterson has been given a deal that includes a massive amount of guaranteed cash. One source close to the signing said it's among the most guaranteed money a runner has signed in recent years (the source would not confirm the amount of money Peterson got).

Is it a risk? Hell, yeah, it is. But it's also a sign. NFL teams, with higher salary cap numbers, awash in cash, and fully aware there will be labor peace for a decade, are willing to take more risks with guaranteed money. We just saw Chris Johnson sign a deal that got him $31 million guaranteed dollars.

Peterson has earned the trust of the Vikings and is so relentless and proficient the Vikings figure it's well worth the risk.

This isn't a seismic shift but it's significant.

Just remember that a little bit of that money will be coming out of your pocket the next time your cable/satellite bill goes up.  NFL star players need to be very thankful for the money that certain cable networks are throwing at the NFL.
It doesn't work that way.  The NFL makes money off of the fans, yes, but then it turns around and distributes the money to owners (and they make it too off the fans) who then pay the players.

It is similar to how you and I pay taxes that pay our politicians, judges, cops and other government employees.  Although we pay their salaries none of them consider themselves as working for us.

Nobody is thankful for those of us that get hosed paying for it.  We're just commodities.  Wallets.  Get used to it honestly, that's life.

Isn't Minnesota's new stadium deal in limbo ? I hope for the sake of the fiercely loyal fans that the team and AP sticks around for years. Please move Jacksonville to LA. PLEASE !!!

please... as a packers fan, even I know that Vikings fans aren't going to "jump ship"... that had nothing to do with this. this is business, pure and simple. As much as I hate to say it, he's the best, most complete RB in the game today and has earned that $$$ since day one. If they didn't pay him, someone else was already lined up to do it. BUSINESS. End of story.

After last year's cluster-eff, management was over the barrel. They needed to sign AP to keep the fans from jumping ship.

This is about keeping the guy who fills the seats happy, same with the titans.  There are busts at every position that were high picks, as well as late round studs, Tom Brady???  Terrell Davis was rushing champ in super bowl winning season as well as Emmitt.  I agree about paying a left tackle, but you are only going to pay guys who are on your team or free agents, when is the last time a stud left tackle made it to free agency?  Also, nobody pays to watch great left tackle play!!!  They pay to watch playmakers.
