The NFL was set on fire when an Indianapolis radio station reported quarterback Peyton Manning will need an additional surgery on his neck. Well, that isn't true. Yet.
Emphasis on yet. ESPN reported Manning is seeing additional specialists due to the slow healing of his neck. That is accurate.
After speaking to a source on the Colts the team didn't believe Manning would get another surgery. There was, however, a serious concern that Manning was not only going to miss the season opener but the potential was for Manning to miss four or five games. Or more.
Just to be clear: I'm not saying this will happen but there is a great deal of concern about the progress of Manning's healing. It appears to be going far more slowly than the Colts or Manning are saying publicly.
The Colts have been preparing for the worst, I'm told, beginning this week. When Kerry Collins was signed some on the coaching staff always thought Collins would replace Manning for a game or two. Now, that mindset is changing within the team. I can tell you the coaches are preparing for a longer period of life without Manning. They are hoping for the best but now fearing the worst.
So, for now, no additional surgery for Manning. But this is starting to look extremely dicey.
This is starting to look very bad for Manning.

Colts worried but no extra surgery for Manning...Manning is seeing additional specialists... God, I hate that word, specialist. If they were so special Manning wouldn't have to go see more of them. Amazing how this country thinks so highly of physicians. |

Colts worried but no extra surgery for ManningThat's a good point, but not one Colts' fans would want to consider. Especially seeing that Reggie Wayne is getting up there and the window of opportunity is closing....that coupled with the progress of divisional rivals makes it even harder for the Colts to get by without Manning.
With the rookie payscale in place, a lot of teams won't be afraid to go after the higher draft picks because they won't break the bank on a chance, but to lose a season to get one is tough to suffer through. |

Colts worried but no extra surgery for ManningHe hasn't even practiced yet. I know Manning is a seasoned pro and can jump right in because it's his offense. He doesn't need much practice time with his core receivers because they know each other very well.
This Colts team was built specifically for Manning. The offense is his and no one, and I mean no one, can or ever will be able to run it like him. Not even close. It's obvious he's going to miss some time, maybe even some significant time, but I sincerely hope this isn't the end. He hasn't been hit enough to retire on injury. His body probably has a good 5-6 years left in it if he can get his neck healthy. |

Colts worried but no extra surgery for Manningthe colts could actually be tremendously fortunate. imagine peyton's injury is very bad and they shut him down, he sits the season. the colts would be awful, could end up 3-13 without peyton. they then wind up with the #1 pick and end up with andrew luck, another once in a generation QB to groom behind peyton for a couple of years. it'd be another huge QB prospect who took an extra year of college and ended up with the colts as a result. it'd be pretty interesting

Colts worried but no extra surgery for ManningAs a fan the Colts need to do the right thing with Peyton, which may mean the future without him starts sooner rather than later. In the list of potentially bad moves must now be the money that is tied up in an injured quarterback. While I understand the concern about the personnel moves, the handcuffs that limit the flexibility come from the star contracts - Peyton, Freeney, maybe Wayne and Clark. They have done a good job of maintaining a winning product but the depth has been eroding since the Super Bowl win. Injuries factor in but the free agant losses, especially in the o-line have not been well replaced. Ugoh - bust, etc. |

Colts worried but no extra surgery for ManningAs a Titans fan, it would be nice to see the division be more competetive. Heck, Peyton Manning is my most hated player EVER, but you never want to see an elite athlete go through this kind of stuff. Hopefully he only misses a game or two and is back. I don't think anyone wants to win the division and get the asterisk put by the title because Manning didn't play all season. And it is funny to see him shred the Texans defense when all game week all we hear about is how it's now the Texans time, that was funny 3 years ago, but now it's just getting old.
