If the reported number by ESPN that Larry Fitzgerald received $50 million is true -- and I am suspect since agents inflate salaries all the time -- then the Arizona Cardinals are fools.
You don't give that kind of guaranteed money to a wide receiver. Quarterbacks, yes. Drew Brees, yes. Peyton Manning, sure. Tom Brady, hell yeah. A wide receiver? That's idiotic.
Maybe a left tackle. Emphasis on maybe. Maybe a pass rusher. Emphasis on maybe. But not a wideout.
Fitzgerald is a future Hall of Famer, a hard worker, and someone who comes from good family. He's a leader. He deserves a huge payday but you don't give a wideout quarterback money in a salary cap league. Fitzgerald alone now occupies some 12 percent of Arizona's salary cap.
A wide receiver. Twelve percent of the cap.
Not even if that wide receiver was named Jerry Rice.
Business reporter Darren Rovell reported that based on Fitzgerald's $15 million annual salary and average of touchdowns per year Fitzgerald will now earn $1.6 million a touchdown.
Good to see the Cardinals opening up their wallet. There was a time when the team was among the most stingy in all of sports.
Maybe, now, they're overcompensating.

The Arizona Cardinals are foolsThe ONLY thing that will make this a good or bad deal for the Cards is where they end up at the end of the season. The numbers won't matter, who gets what won't matter, who you compare who to won't matter at all. If they wind up 11-5 this and the Kolb deal will look like the best thing ever, if they wind up 5-11 Card mamagement will get blasted for both deals. At least Fitzgerald is a proven factor, we know what he's capable of and what he's done. Kolb on the other hand is a pure chance experiment. Hopefully it will all work out, the best thing going for the Cards is the very very very weak division they are in, anything close to a .500 team will be looking at the playoffs.
