The Daily Shoutout: Tim Tebow

OPENING HIT: The Dallas Cowboys played the Denver Tebows on Thursday night and during the game Cowboys announcers pretty much destroyed Tebow focusing on -- of all things -- his lack of accuracy during warmups. It was pretty funny, actually. Now, I don't think Tebow is an NFL quarterback, but to rip him for his throws during freaking warmups is pretty insane. The Tebow bashing has reached DefCon levels when that happens.

But again, he's not a pro quarterback, and based on what I've seen, he won't be anything more than a backup, if that. It's easy to see why and it leads to a difficult truth and problem: Tebow was extremely ill-served by his college offense and coach.

The offense Urban Meyer runs is great for college but horrible if you're a QB with NFL aspirations. In the NFL, coaches laugh at the spread/gun/motor/victory/Samauri whatever the hell they're called offenses. But the problem is, Meyer wins with it. The system works in the SEC; it just doesn't work in the AFC.

That's the quandry. In the NFL it's all about the dropback throw. But Meyer's offense doesn't do that (often). So by running that offense, Meyer does Tebow and other Gator quarterbacks a disservice, but Meyer can't think about that, because he wins national championships with that offense. He has to think about the team.

But you can see the weaknesses in Tebow's game and they are directly related to Meyer's offense. The Meyer offense doesn't require many dropback throws or throwing accuracy--two things that are mandatory in the NFL. So Tebow spent years in an offense that is almost the polar opposite of what the pros do. So of course he's going to struggle in the NFL for a long time.

What was Meyer supposed to do to help Tebow prepare for the pros? Not much Meyer could do in terms of the Gator offense. Meyer has to think about the team, not one guy. But tebow's struggles show the problem of running a gimmick college offense then trying to move up to the big boys.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR Hines Ward? The Steelers signed Jerricho Cotchery. On the surface, not an NFL shattering move but basically Cotchery and Hines Ward are the same style of receiver. (Sure, Ward is a Hall of Famer, to me, but you get the point.) Both work out of the slot, both a possession type players, and neither plays with great speed. In many ways, they're the same guy.

Would the Steelers ever dump Ward? No. At least, I don't think they would. Yet this is interesting because isn't Cotchery going to seriously cut into Ward's production? This will be an interesting situation to watch.

THE LAST WORD: It was only crappy preseason but damn it was good to have football back.

The Daily Shoutout: Tim Tebow

I do think he's bashing Meyer's system more than he is Tebow.  Can you name one of Meyer's QB's that were successful in the NFL?

I don't know squat about football? lol...actually I know a ton about football..I have my doubts about Tebow as an NFL quarterback, because ever since he becaome a Florida Gator they've talked about his throwing mechanics, and how questionable his passing was, not to mention the system he was in with Urban Meyer.  But that doesn't mean that writers, reporters and commentators should be so incredibly obsessed with him not being ready for the NFL yet...they're hyping up something that shouldn't really be hyped at all.  I never heard as much scrutiny on a single player before in my life.  Just gets irritating, and I'm not even a Gator fan!  But I guess they gotta pick a topic and beat it to death every season..just wish it wasn't about a good guy like Tebow who these characters could learn from.

Freeman raves about Cam Newton but bashes Tim Tebow. Two equally non-NFL ready QBs. Please CBS, stop the Tebow hate, you're actually causing me to start pulling for him, which is unthinkable. And I am picturing a season of unquestioned support for Cam Newton, despite how awful he is, spearheaded by Freeman. What a joke. People just read Freeman and Doyel for laughs.

Cut him already and move on from the nightmare that was the McDaniels era.  It sucks for Tim because he never should have been selected in the first round and therefore subject to all this.  Had he been drafted appropriately (and by a guy that wasn't fired) he may have been given the time to develop but at a first round price tag a team needs immediate returns--they can't afford to wait 3-5 seasons.  Tebow should learn the H-back position and could be a tremendous goal-line threat as a receiver, runner or occasional passer.  They guy could be a touchdown machine in that role.

To all you playing the reverse-racism card, player-please!  The author, perhaps an idiot, wasn't being racist just honest.
To you morons dropping scripture, you should stick to the other sunday activities because you don't know squat about NFL football.  I just wish I was there to take your bets and clean you out, oh wait you probably don't gamble either.

IF i read or hear one more thing about Tebow NOT being an NFL QB, I'm gonna go crazy...who cares if he's not NFL ready yet?  Why is HE such a HUUUUGE deal?  There have been countless NFL "busts" over the years, and Tebow hasn't even become a bust yet and still people are bashing on him.  We hear almost nothing about Alex Smith or Leinart or Jamarcus Russell...yet we get article after article and sports announcers bashing Tebow...    Matthew 10:22  "You will be hated by everyone because of Me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved."
