WHERE ARE WE? I don't mean in the cosmic sense. I mean in the labor talks between the NFL's owners and players. One report recently said we were close to a deal. Another said progress had slowed. The actuality remains a deal is closer than both sides want to publicly admit and we're still on track for a deal to get done in time to save both the preseason and regular season. It'll get done because neither side wants to lose the hundreds of millions in revenues the preseason brings them. The good, old fashioned smell of cash will get the deal done. In the meantime, lawyers will squabble and there will be good days and bad. Just shut up and get it done? Absolutely and that's what will happen.
One small piece of information. Most NFL head and assistant coaches are taking vacation now knowing they won't get a day of rest for many months once the lockout ends. Some of those coaches are traveling overseas. I'm told those coaches haven't been given any kind of notice to return home so while a deal will happen it likely isn't hours or days away. Yet.
TIKI BARBER: Says he has two teams on his short list, the Steelers and Buccaneers. Problem for Barber is I don't think the Steelers and Bucs give a damn about Barber. There is no way in hell the Steelers, to be sure, will sign Barber.
See you Thursday.
