Scout: Cam Newton is the next Ben Roethlisberger

INDIANAPOLIS: Actually, this is exactly what an African-American NFL scout stated about Cam Newton:
"Cam Newton is the black Ben Roethlisberger."
This is what he meant and his comparison had nothing to do with off-the-field. He meant strictly on it.
When looking at Newton now and Roethlisberger coming out of college the parallels are indeed interesting. Newton is far more decorated with a Heisman and national championship than Roethlisberger was coming out of Miami University but both men had size and big arms. Both were gritty. Both ran well. Both escaped sacks. Both won a lot of games.
Newton has a great deal to prove. He's done nothing on the NFL level but the Roethlisberger comparison is actually legitimate strictly in terms of deciphering who Newton best resembles in the pros now.
The scout was also making another type of statement with the comparison. There are plenty of personnel men who have expressed privately to me how they tire of the black quarterback to black quarterback comparisons when they aren't relevant. It's beyond stupid, for example, to compare Newton to Mike Vick. That's like comparing a Great Dane to a Jack Russell.
Maybe I shouldn't use dog analogies.
But you get the point.

Warren Moon was elected to the Pro-Bowl nine times, and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. Jamarcus Russell was a fat, out of shape, overrated, substance abuser who was drafted by Oakland, and never did anything but the purple drank. The Raiders dumped him and he is out of football forever. He managed to get $37 million from the Raiders before being shown the door. Cam Newton is compared to JaMarcus Russell because (1) their physical stature is similar (2) they both had big arms, but questionable accuracy and touch (3) they both have questionable character (4) they both lacked maturity. The similarities between Newton and Russell are scary, particularly if you are an NFL GM. Warren Moon is a HOF'er. He was a great QB, and not just a great "black" quarterback. Moon was a traditional, classic, pocket passer with a quick release. He had flawless mechanics, and threw a beautiful ball. He wasn't "dynamic", didn't sling the ball, didn't carry the ball low like a loaf of bread, and he worked mostly up under center. Moon wasn't a man on a mission, and wasn't "down for the struggle". He was just great QB, although he did have a penchant for punching his wife around. Cam Newton lacks intellignece, maturity, and character. He will flop like a flounder in the NFL.
