University of Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun missed the NCAA Tournament opening round game against Chattanooga due to acute stress, a problem that has plagued the coach before, according to a person close to the situation.
While the school is providing little or no detail as to why Calhoun missed the game, the source said Calhoun hasn't been feeling well over the past 24-48 hours, and the reason was due to a buildup of stress.
Calhoun will likely return for the team's second round game, the source explained, but added it's not a certainty.
CBS Sports reported that Calhoun was taken to a local hospital. The school is saying Calhoun is now in the care of team physician Dr. Jeff Anderson.
In January of 2008, Calhoun missed games with what the school called a combination of stress and exhaustion. Calhoun added then that he'd been suffering from a gastric problem, the latter issue he's faced for some time. This year he missed a game due to shingles.
If there is such a thing as a good omen arising from a potentially serious situation, it's this. In the past, Calhoun has missed three NCAA Tournament games. In two of those instances, the Huskies went on to win a national championship.
